Foundation Programme

All programmes of medical education and training developed  delivered by the Trust are guided by - and mapped to - the Health Education England (HEE) Quality Framework, The General Medical Council (GMC) Promoting Excellence: Standards for Medical Education & Training, and the curriculum requirements determined by the Royal College aligned to each specialty and programme area.

You will note that the curriculum links, HEE and  GMC quality domains are clearly identified on all programmes of training, including core and specialty teaching sessions.
Foundation Programme and PA Preceptorship Programme

Southport and Ormskirk Trust have 28 F1 and 27 F2 doctors on their 2-year foundation programme in the trust. In their 2 years here, they rotate across 6 specialities making the programme broad and varied. Each rotation is 3 months long. On each rotation, foundation doctors are allocated a clinical supervisor and also have an Educational Supervisor to support them throughout their time here.

The UKFPO facilitates the operation and continuing development of the Foundation Programme. The UKFPO is jointly funded and governed by Health Education England (HEE) and the four UK Health Departments.
The new UK Foundation Programme Curriculum 2021 has now been published. The curriculum sets out a holistic approach to care including physical health, mental health and social health and the skills required to manage this in both acute and community settings and for patients with chronic conditions. Foundation doctors must demonstrate that they are competent in the traditional elements of medical training but also in areas such as communication and consultation skills, patient safety and teamwork. The curriculum provides a framework for educational progression that will help them achieve these skills and supports them through the first two years of professional development after graduation from medical school.

What Our Library Users Are Saying...

"Apprentices now have greater access to resources, not only at College or University but in the workplace. The benefits are not solely logistical; the resources and services available to them via the Library & Knowledge Service are current, relevant and varied."

"The library provided me with the evidence base to support a service development of developing a early discharge detox policy. This has improved patient clinical outcomes. This also reduces length of stay and re-attendance at A&E."

"Literature searches carried out by the library staff assisted in the development of a new education program for unregistered staff in response to the Francis report."

"The library carried out a literature search and provided my team with a wealth of relevant information from a variety of different sources that we were able to use within our poster presentation."

"The information I receive has a positive impact in my role as a Non-Executive Director. Over the past year in post I have found the library alerting service to be an invaluable resource it is a great way to be kept informed via the on-line platform that I can access at times to suit."
