NHS Leadership Academy
The Trust has an annual membership with the NHS Leadership Academy, the home of health and care leadership development. Their curriculum of programmes, resources and activities bring world-class learning and development to NHS people and partners.
A large range of programmes are on offer to you via the Trust’s membership to the NHS Leadership Academy and regional NW Leadership Academy to develop your leadership style. Talk with your line manager about the options that are available and most suitable for you at your stage on your leadership journey.
Below is an overview of some of the core leadership development opportunities open to all our staff. Some programmes are free, some will incur a cost.

NHS Leadership Healthcare Model Self- Assessment Tool
A free way to assess your leadership style against the NHS Healthcare Leadership Model. This is the model that is in use across the whole NHS, it describes what good leaders do. It will help you develop as a leader by showing you how your leadership behaviours affect the culture and climate that you, your colleagues and teams work in. Use the model to help you to think about your own leadership development needs.

360 degree feedback
360 degree feedback is a powerful tool to help individuals identify where their leadership strengths and development needs lie regardless of job role. The process includes getting confidential feedback from line managers, peers and direct reports (if applicable). As a result, it gives an individual an insight into other people’s perceptions of their leadership abilities and behaviour. All staff have access to a free 360. Edward Jenner Leadership Programme
The Edward Jenner programme is your first port of call if you’re looking to build a strong foundation of leadership skills that can help enhance your confidence and competence in your role. The programme has been designed to offer flexibility as a series of online short courses. Cost – FREE
Alternatively, you can opt to complete the 12-month Edward Jenner Programme via the fully funded apprenticeship route:
Mary Seacole Leadership Programme
The Mary Seacole programme is a 6-month leadership development programme, designed in partnership with global experts, and delivered by experienced facilitators to develop your knowledge and skills in leadership and management.
For first time leaders in healthcare, it’s for you if you are in a ‘formal’ position of leadership with responsibilities for people and services, and able to relate what you learn to your workplace. You must be able to commit to a minimum of 5 hours of study per week.
Cost - £995 per person
Alternatively, you can opt to complete the 30-month Mary Seacole Programme via the fully funded apprenticeship route:
Rosalind Franklin Programme
The Rosalind Franklin programme will support you to become outstanding innovators, leaders, and team members working across the health and care system, to help improve services for people and communities that access them. The programme is for mid-level leaders aspiring to lead large and complex programmes, departments, services or systems.
The programme is 9 months long with eight workshop days and you’ll be expected to commit approximately four to five hours a week to study.
Cost £1200 per person

Elizabeth Garrett Anderson Leadership Development Programme
The Elizabeth Garrett Anderson Programme is a 24-month master’s degree programme in Healthcare Leadership. It will equip you with confidence to challenge the status quo and drive real and lasting change to improve the patient experience.
It’s for any middle to senior level leader currently responsible for other leaders and aspiring to lead large and complex programmes, departments, services, or systems of care.
Cost - £6000 per person
Alternatively, you can opt to complete the 24-month Elizabeth Garrett Anderson Leadership Programme via the fully funded apprenticeship route:
Nye Bevan Leadership Development Programme
The Nye Bevan programme accelerates people into executive roles that span organisational boundaries; and supports senior leaders to move beyond leadership within their area of expertise. Delivered in partnership with KPMG, PwC and other international and national experts in health and organisational performance, the programme offers support and learning to build personal resilience, confidence and capabilities over 12 months.
Cost- £4500 per person
Stepping Up Programme
The Stepping Up programme is aimed at black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) leaders and aspiring BAME leaders across healthcare working in bands 5 to 7 or equivalent.
It’s been designed for individuals who have an interest in developing their leadership abilities and want to be involved in creating a transformational change in equality and diversity across the healthcare sector.
The programme is split into two cohorts – one for bands 5 and 6 (or equivalent) and another for people in band 7 (or equivalent) roles.
Cost - The Stepping Up programme is fully funded by the NHS Leadership Academy.
Foundations in System Leadership; collaborating for Health and Care
The Foundations in System Leadership; collaborating for health and care programme is open to all colleagues working in health, care, local authorities and voluntary sector partnerships, who have a desire to improve the way they collaborate across organisational, professional and hierarchical boundaries to design and deliver better health outcomes for the communities they serve.
Core Managers: Developing Inclusive Workplaces programme
A series of short courses covering different themes of inclusive workplaces, this course is designed to suit health and care managers and supervisors to help them develop core inclusive leadership skills.

NW Leadership Learning Zone
We know how important it is for clinicians and leaders at all levels to keep their skills updated to inspire and lead their teams. Equally, we understand how crucial it is for you to personally improve your skills and effectiveness. Truly authentic leadership is a journey and these online modules that we have created will enable you to support that journey to truly realise your potential.
Bitesize modules
You have access to several ‘bitesize modules’ including short courses on leadership. Free to anyone working in the NHS, the short courses aim to help people to develop new skills and discover new ways to improve your experience of work with short guides developed by experts. There are numerous modules with various themes ranging from authentic leadership to courageous conversations.
NWLA Collaborative Masterclasses
An influential partnership, formed from cross sector organisations in the North West, representing the NHS, health and social care and local government to bring you a range of collaborative masterclasses.
By combining unique specialisms, the collaboration explores innovative thinking with expert speakers, to provide cross sector knowledge sharing for leaders across the North West.
System Leadership Development
This offer has been commissioned to directly support senior leaders across the North West (including but not exclusive to NHS Organisation Board and Sub Board post-holders, Executive and Governing Body Leads, Primary Care Network senior leadership teams and those working across system level roles)
These modules are aimed at leaders working across systems who are in a position to share their experiences of system leadership
Executive Suite
The Executive Suite provides a range of opportunities for senior leaders to both access support and development for themselves and to aid them in also supporting the development of their staff into the future.
They are designed to support you to remain a resilient leader, continue to thrive in your role, and set cultures that value the importance of health and wellbeing.
The offers are open to all executive leaders across health and care in England.
